Stay Organized to Stay Sane
I’m not exactly the most organized person in the world, so you can either take this advice as hypocritical or lessons learned from failure. Really, the lesson to learn here is that organization greatly reduces anxiety. After the jump, read a more detailed explanation.
Anxiety isn’t always bad. I know when I get anxious about finishing a paper I generally start working on it more. But anxiety becomes a problem when it takes over your life. Organizing things has a way of reducing that anxiety in many ways. So how can you use organization to keep yourself sane?
- By keeping everything where it belongs you should always know where it is. I recently lost the charger for my camera batteries. Since Rock Hill doesn’t have anywhere that I know of that sells this charger, it would have meant driving to Charlotte to buy another one or having one shipped. And I’m not sure if I could have gotten through this week’s games without charging my batteries at some point. If I had kept the charger plugged in or in the camera bag where it belongs I would have known where it was and not spend hours looking for it.
- Establish a holding area for anything not in it’s place. Sometimes you need to drop something off in the room quickly and don’t really have time to put it away where it belongs. But if you have a box or somewhere else where things go if they’re not put away (sort of like cleaning purgatory) then you know where to look when you can’t find something.
- Schedule time off. This might sound a bit odd at first, but it works. If you have time scheduled to relax then you shouldn’t start thinking that you don’t have time to relax. Set an alarm of some sort (be it music turning off or an alarm turning on) so that you know when to start working again.
- Sunbird and Remember the Milk are your friend. If you have problems remembering what you have to do or when things need to be finished by, either of these two applications can be a big help.
- Automate tasks. If you find yourself find yourself doing the same things everyday, make them automatic. This goes for tasks both on and off the computer. Check back later for how to automate tasks on your computer.
As you can see, organization can make your life a lot easier. Please let us know some other ways organization can help or ask any questions you make have in the comment box below.
